Algae for Fuel – Current Events 3/24/17

Japanese firm Euglena has been using a type of algae for in food and cosmetics. But they see many other uses that these particular algae have. This includes jet fuel. The company is aiming to produce 33,000 gallons of jet fuel a year from Japan’s first algae biofuel refinery. They are making this possible by partnering with one of Japan’s largest airlines, the All Nippon Airlines (ANA).

They extract certain parts of the plants in order to create a practical fuel source for the planes. This could mean that eventually, we will no longer have to use any form of fossil fuels to fuel planes if the project is successful. The articles said that these algae could be used in thousands of ways, and this is simply another idea that Euglena has come up with to help out the planet.
